Swedish Carrier Demos Gigabit Ethernet Network

Facilities-based carrier Utfors AB of Sweden has demonstrated a Gigabit Ethernet network using 80 kilometers of fiber optic cable between Stockholm and Uppsala and Packet Engines optoelectronics. The demo featured voice-over-IP, video-on-demand, and local area network interconnect services.

Utfors plans to launch what Packet Engines bills as Europe's first commercial Gigabit Ethernet metropolitan area network in November 1998.
